BUN varies with hydration, protein intake and kidney function.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (bun) is a laboratory test. Measures urea nitrogen, a protein-breakdown waste product.
Your clinician can advise whether this test is appropriate for you. The result should be read with the laboratory range, symptoms, medical history and other relevant results. The listed sample type is Blood (Serum).

| Conducted at | Thyrocare Labs |

| Lab Accreditation | CAP, NABL, UKAS, ANAB |
| Thyrocare Sample-Report Range | 7.94 - 20.07 |
| Parameter | Unit | Reference Range |
|---|---|---|
| BLOOD UREA NITROGEN (BUN) | mg/dL | 7.94 - 20.07 |
A BUN test determines the amount of urea nitrogen in blood and ensures if kidneys are working well. The urea nitrogen is a waste product produced by our body during the breakdown of protein in food. This protein forms in the liver and then travels through our blood to our kidneys. In a healthy individual, the urea nitrogen is then filtered by the kidneys and excreted through urine.

Women and children show lesser BUN value due to the typical protein metabolism found in them compared to male population. It is normal to have a small amount of urea nitrogen in the blood, typically ranging from 5 to 20 mg/dL or 1.2 to 7.1 mmol/L. Please note that the normal range mentioned above varies with the reference range of the lab, so make sure to interpret the values with the help of your physician. A higher amount of urea nitrogen in blood rebuts the plausibility of early kidney disease due to a high protein diet, internal bleeding, outcome of corticoid therapy, or some other reason that should be investigated further.
The normal BUN levels vary with age and sex. Most probably BUN test is interpreted along with serum creatinine to determine kidney function, it is a part of the comprehensive metabolic panel prescribed during the screening of kidney function. Normal BUN levels can be reverted by treating underlying kidney diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Electrolyte abnormality, or any other interconnecting causes with the help of a Nephrologist.

|---|---|---|
| General guide | 6 to 20 mg/dL | Common adult blood range; lab limits vary. |
| High BUN | Above lab range | May reflect kidney function, dehydration or high protein breakdown. |
