A total calcium blood test measures calcium in the blood. Results are interpreted alongside the laboratory reference range, symptoms and, when appropriate, albumin, vitamin D or parathyroid hormone results.
No fasting is usually required for a total calcium blood test. You can eat and drink normally unless your clinician, or another test booked at the same time, gives different instructions. Do not stop prescribed medicines or supplements on your own; tell the booking team or clinician about calcium, vitamin D and regular medicines.
A routine blood draw is low risk. You may feel a brief sting when the needle goes in, and some people notice temporary bruising, soreness or light-headedness afterwards. Fainting and infection are uncommon. The sample is collected at your home by a trained phlebotomist using sterile equipment, and the draw takes only a few minutes. If you feel unwell during or after collection, tell the phlebotomist or speak to your doctor.
